Frequently Asked Questions
You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers?
We do our best here at the Lit Review to answer any questions you might have.
If for any reason you can’t find the information you’re looking for below, contact us and ask directly. We’ll do our best to answer you as quickly as possible.
Thanks.
- If I send you my book will you review it?
No, we will not. We are not book reviewers; we merely compile literary criticism from established book reviewers and assign scores based on what we think the reviewer would’ve given the book if they had a 5-star rating system at their disposal.
In an effort to give our readers a fair and impartial impression of what literary critics think about books we’ve removed ourselves from the equation. We reference only reviews written by someone else, and we try to make sure the reviews we do cite are the most reputable sources available.
- How are the stars assigned to individual book reviews determined?
Most book reviews don’t publish actual scores. You actually have to read through the whole book review before you get to know what the reviewer thinks about the book being reviewed.
At the Lit Review, we actually read the whole review, and then we subjectively assign a score from zero to five stars based on our impression of the reviewers intention. Five stars reflects a book that’s a brilliant read, whereas zero stars would indicate the book was absolute drivel.
- How is the Yay or Nay score calculated?
We use all the stars a book has earned to generate the Yay or Nay score. We do a little bit of math based on the average number of stars earned to generate a percentage. A passing grade is set at 60%, and any book that gets a passing grade gets a big green check mark. Anything less and we give it a big red X.
- Where’s my comment?
Our current policy is to hold a user’s very first comment until we can verify that it is not spam. We are doing our best to maintain a high level of quality on our site, and we don’t want to sully it by letting in comments that say nothing about the books being discussed here in a desperate attempt to create links to another site. It’s a detestable practice and we refuse to condone it.
That said, all relevant comments about the books being discussed here are welcome. We check our incoming comments several times a day and are delighted when we get to green light a new user. Feel free to join in the discussion and we’ll approve you as quickly as we can.
- Where did all the links go?
Sometimes the websites hosting the original reviews choose to remove their reviews after a certain period of time. These decisions are beyond the control of the Lit Review, but we have concessions in place to reduce user frustration when this happens.
At least once a day we clean up the site to make sure we get rid of all the expired links, saving you the trouble of clicking through to a 404 error.
- Where are the older books?
The Lit Review started actively compiling book reviews in January/February 2010. Regrettably, at this juncture in history, we haven’t got the resources available to enable us to get an accurate picture of anything that happened before that time.
- Are you hiring?
At this time, we have all the staff we can handle. Should that change, we’ll make note of it here. Thanks for your interest.
