Description: William Alexander is determined to bake the perfect loaf of bread. He tasted it long ago, in a restaurant, and has been trying to reproduce it ever since. Without success. 3 Book Reviews for “52 Loaves: One Man’s Relentless Pursuit of Truth, Meaning, and a Perfect Crust” by William Alexander
- Alexander’s breathless, witty memoir is a joy to read. It’s equal parts fact and fun…. As the adage goes, it’s the journey and not the destination. And for the reader, the trip is a gratifying one.
- Alexander’s willingness to portray himself as somewhat hapless is what saves this book from self-absorption, given that its premise is witnessing him bake the same loaf of bread week after week…. The final result of his journey looks and tastes very much like success, but its culmination is as much spiritual as edible.
- “52 Loaves” is at once a warm, laugh-out-loud (and cloying, at times) memoir of that year…. While his experience at the monastery is emotionally draining and brings another epiphany, it reads like a long magazine article, his joie de vivre replaced with an unexpected spiritual awakening, rather at odds with the rest of his tale. Still, there is much to savor here, and Alexander entertainingly unravels many of the staff of life’s deep mysteries for the uninitiated.
